HVAC Frequently Asked Questions

At Lavoie Heating Service, we know homeowners have a lot of questions when it comes to heating and cooling systems. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from customers throughout our service area.

How often should I service my HVAC system?

We recommend servicing your system twice per year:

  • Once in the spring for your air conditioning
  • Once in the fall for your heating system

Regular maintenance helps prevent breakdowns, improves efficiency, and extends the life of your equipment.

How do I know if I should repair or replace my system?

A good rule of thumb:

  • If your system is 10–15+ years old
  • Requires frequent repairs
  • Or your energy bills are increasing

…it may be more cost-effective to replace it. We’re always happy to give honest recommendations based on your situation.

How long do HVAC systems typically last?

  • Furnaces: 15–20 years
  • Boilers: 15–25 years
  • Air conditioners: 10–15 years
  • Mini splits: 12–20 years

Proper maintenance can significantly extend the lifespan of your system.

What size HVAC system do I need?

System sizing depends on:

  • Square footage
  • Insulation
  • Layout of your home
  • Windows and sun exposure

We perform proper load calculations to ensure your system is sized correctly—oversized or undersized systems can cause comfort and efficiency issues.

How often should I change my air filter?

For most homes:

  • Every 1–3 months for standard filters

Homes with pets, allergies, or higher usage may need more frequent changes.

Do you offer emergency HVAC services?

Yes—we provide emergency service with no additional fees for nights, weekends, or holidays for our maintenance plan customers. Fast, reliable service is always our priority. If not a maintenance plan customer, emergency services are still provided with an additional fee.

What are the signs my system is about to fail?

Watch for:

  • Strange noises
  • Weak airflow
  • Uneven temperatures
  • Frequent cycling
  • Higher energy bills

If you notice any of these, it’s best to have your system checked before it completely breaks down.
